To continue on the Young Marble Giants kinda style i decided to bring home the Raincoats! Late seventies art punk band, in fact, another of the first post-punk bands to come to earth. A killer band making crazy riffs based up on start and stops type of action, broken rythms with amateur vocals all the way. Just lovely, and they also count with one of my favourite covers ever, to me, almost a re-written song. Lola originally by the Kinks, they put the song on another level. Anyway, their own songs make it down to listen them just right now. I think they are in fact one of the firsts all-female punk bands to come out of England. Another milestone for what is indie music today, and a key point for all the riot grrrl 90s thing of Bikini Kill etc etc.
Para seguir la línea marcada por Young Marble Giants y no alejarnos demasiado del tipo de sonido hoy traemos nada más y nada menos que a las Raincoats! Un grupo que se supo aprovechar del punk para sacar su propio sonido y adaptarlo a su estilo, con un matiz muy artístico de no saber usar los instrumentos pero si de tener idea de como hacer buena música al igual que los anteriores se acercaron al post-punk cuando no tenía nombre. Se sacaron de la manga un sonido que más tarde sería imitado por mogollón de grupos e influenciando con su estilo al movimiento Riot Grrrl de finales de los 80s y 90s de hecho por influenciar influenciaron hasta a Kurt Cobain que las quería para que fuesen sus teloneras en una gira ya posterior a su momento de muerte. Pero no estamos aquí para hablar de este menda lerenda con que para no despistarme más os dejo con este precioso grupo super-amateur pero encantador y rebelde.

If someone asks me what's the best new wave band ever i won't wait a second until i say Devo. And they are much more than that, they are not just synths or pop music with 80s look and production. They are brilliant, one of my favourite bands ever and basically, the only band (along with some Beastie Boys and Cramps) that i love their video clips and tv performances. Just the perfect look of a crazy looking era. Their music fits perfectly their aesthetics and when you see a video and you listen later to the same song you really associate the song with the video. It's a perfect match. They are not just the music, it's also their visuals. People will always say that modern clip is directly influenced by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (that is quite a good video and part of truth) but i think Devo on their own are also part of the game. Just look and listen!
Devo, mi exponente básico de grupo que supo aprovecharse de los 80s y no caer en los errores de los 80s. Look retro-futurista, sintentizadores (bien usados) por doquier, videos frenéticos con efectos de época (bien usados) y horterismo a raudales. Si los Sex Pistols son la representación perfecta del punk, ellos lo son de los 80s divertidos y la new wave. Aunque ellos son mucho más que eso. Son una de las mejores bandas que ha habido y que mejor ha sabido enlazar la música con lo audiovisual. Todo encaja a la perfección de una forma ridicula. Donde otros han caido intentando ir a la última ellos no pasan de moda riendose de ella misma. Canciones de pop perfectas con el mejor look de todos los 80.

Late 60s, hippism is all around and the Jefferson Airplane are close to be the biggest psychedelic act around. At least San Francisco's favourites. Beginning as a folk rock band they went to the first places in the charts with their second album "Surrealistic Pillow" thanks to their hits "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit". Two of the most famous 60s songs that transformed them into one of america's biggest psychedelic acts and making them go from their folk to a pure psychedelic pop act on later abums like "After bathing at Baxter's" to the more rock/revolutionary side of "Volunteers" (my favourite after Surrealistic Pillow). Just an amazing band. Love the 60s.
Jefferson Airplane, grupo encantador que se ha ganado el amor de todos gracias a "Somebody to Love" y "White Rabbit". Unos exitazos en la época que les llevaron a lo más alto de las listas de discos con su tremendo disco "Surrealistic Pillow". El grupo en sí en esta primera época tira más bien del rock y de hecho estas dos canciones no es que hagan buen ejemplo del sonido del grupo son más bien las menos. Siempre, a lo largo de toda su carrera se asemejan más a un grupo de folk rock que a este pop psicodélico. Aunque tal como van avanzando van intentado progresar hacia este estilo lo cierto es que no vuelven a llegar tan lejos como en estos dos temas. Igualmente hacen grandes canciones pero a mi forma de ver más clásicas. Os dejo con un par de preciosos videos que he estado viendo mucho estos días navideños.
I wasn't expecting to make a post about Love, but then i found some footage from 1970! Ok, at that point the band was losing their magic but as i see, not live. I would give a leg to see that incarnation of the band live... and i'm not talking about two years prior! But let's get back to the point... Love are the band, people will always jump onto Jimi Hendrix as for the best guitar of all time, maybe is true (just don't say of course...) but Arthur Lee was capable on "Forever Changes" to make an album that is 100 times better and prettier, that you will find new details on it for the rest of your life and wondering how a human could have made such an incredible album. And not just that, their the two previous albums are also incredible, the first one, Love, runs more in a traditional way, not very far away from another american garage bands that were kicking around. The transformation came on "Da Capo" that begans to play with psychedelia and it begans to define the new way of the band to just explode on "Forever Changes".. after that the magic get lost. No pensaba poner nada de Love ya que hasta hace no mucho no encontraba casi material por youtube, en parte, porque el grupo en sus buenos tiempos fue bastante reacio a girar, con que normal. Pero hoy de repente me he encontrado varios videos muy muy chulos (para el fan..) y he decidido escribir un post sobre ellos. Love en sus tres primeros albums básicamente son increíbles, comenzando como un grupo bueno pero tampoco totalmente increíble como llegaría a ser fue madurando y metiendose en la psicodelia hasta llegar a hacer uno de los mejores discos de todos los tiempos, el Forever Changes, un disco monumental de rock con toques muy muy pop semi orquestales y mucha psicodelia. Una delicia que hay que conocer poco a poco para dejarte llevar. Una pasada increíble. Más tarde cambiaría de formación y pierden toda la gracia, pero aún así "Four Sail" es recomendable para el fan del grupo. Más rockero, eso sí. En definitiva, unos mendas que si les hubiese dado la gana de ponerse las pilas tocando podrían haber pisado a Jimi Hendrix en mi opinión.. no como guitarrista, pero sí musicalmente, básicamente engancha mucho más. No en vano eran uno de los grupos de cabecera de Jim Morrison de los Doors.

Os mutantes... right now they are in my mind the greatest band ever. Perfect style (that's why they are here... i try to write about good vintage looking bands, since this is a vintage blog and not a music blog) and such crazy music mixing the best of brasilian music (i used to hate this but not anymore) with the best of the psicodelia. In fact, a lot of people talks about this band as the best psicodelia act. I don't really think so but they are close, one of the bests of course. And for sure.. my favourite brasilian band ever. I don't want to expand more. I'll give you a really famous song from their first LP that probably you will recognize from some TV ads and two incredible live takes where they look and sound awesome. Please, check them, they are wonderful. I recommend to began with their first LP but any of their first four LPs are awesome. Just lovely late 60s pop music.
En la locura me ha dejado este grupo, siempre los he conocido de nombre porque son de lo más sonado de los 60s si nos salimos de los circuitos de Inglaterra y Estados Unidos pero siempre les he tenido un estúpido rin-tin-tin por el hecho de esos dejes brasileños, siempre desde que me empecé a interesar por la música he odiado el estilo de allí peeeero... como todas las tonterías en la vida se pasa (por ejemplo antes no me gustaban ni el gorgonzola ni las aceitunas y ahora flipo con ambos) y lo peor de todo ya no es que me gusten Os Mutantes... que esta gente, pasan por psicodélicos y tampoco es para tanto sino que he caído en la trampa de un género que se llama Tropicalia (¡terror!) que tiene cosas increíbles de las que algún día hablaré. Bueno... volviendo al grupo. Os Mutantes básicamente son una delicia de grupo psicodélico, desde sus perfectos sonidos, que mezclan dejes totalmente brasileños con lo mejor de la psicodelia inglesa, a la magia de sus pintas. Simplemente echad un vistazo a los videos que os cuelgo más abajo y veréis todo el encanto a vintage y locura-hippie-60s que desprenden. El grupo se formó gracias a 2 hermanos brasileños y Rita, también tocaron previamente en otros grupos hasta llegar a formar su propio sonido poniéndolo en práctica en Os Mutantes. Ellos ya empiezan experimentando mucho con la música, ya que su primer disco es del 68 y la época manda, para ir cada vez volviéndose más progresivos (como la época también mandaba). Básicamente sus 4 primeros LPs son increíbles, y sus videos en directo que pululan por youtube casi más todavía.Os dejo un tema de los más famosos que tienen del primer disco y un par de directos demoledores que es lo que más mola.
Lovely music by this lovely girl, her 60s stuff it's precious and fun. A great collection of songs that goes from more orchestal folky songs to more rockin pop songs. Her voice is specially incredible but the arrengements on her songs are also really beautiful. A kind of singin that have get lost in time.

Immensely popular in her native France, the chanteuse first displayed
her breathy, measured vocals in the early and mid-'60s. Her (mostly
self-penned) recordings from that era draw from French pop traditions,
lightweight '50s teen idol rock, girl groups, and sultry jazz and blues
-- sometimes in the same song. The material is perhaps too unreservedly
sentimental for some (in the French tradition), but the songs are
invariably catchy and the production, arrangements, and near-operatic
backup harmonies excellent, at times almost Spector-esque. Fans of Marianne Faithfull's mid-'60s work can find something of a French equivalent here, though Hardy's material was stronger and her delivery more confident.
What it doesn't says is that her style was also amazing!

Tenía ganas de poner un post sobre ella, mi cantante europea favorita de los 60, ¡y de lejos!. No tengo mucho tiempo para escribir pero sí para un par de pamplinas. Increíble voz, estilo 60s a tope y música divertida e hiper-agradable para estar de buen rollo en el caso de las rock and rolleras / poperas y de más emoción con nervios a flor de piel con las más folkies orquestales (para esas realmente a veces hay que tener ganas). En resumen una delicia que vuelvo a escuchar siempre una y otra vez, y que además también es super chulo para cotillear un rato por youtube video clips antiguos, tomas en eurovisión y recopilatorios con fotos.. ¡una chulada todo el material! Por cierto.. el marido de ella también un fuera de serie que tendrá sus posts correspondientes más adelante. ¡Mil besos!
