Here we come again with another vintagetube! Since the last one was a lot of time ago here a reminder of what have been post to this day: Devo , Jefferson Airplane , Love , Os Mutantes , Nico , Françoise Hardy and the Shangri-las. This new one goes for one of my favourite 80s bands.. Young Marble Giants. A precious trio of outstanding post-punk music just using just synths, bass, a drum machine and some guitars. Incredible beautiful music to keep relax, pop minimalism at it's best.Coming on the early 80s from Wales they made their own concept of new wave / post-punk by stripping it down to it's essence. Just wonderful music with wonderful singing by Alice Statton. A key point for what was going to be indie music in the future.

 Aquí vamos con el primer vintagetube que hago desde hace eones con que por si pillásteis el blog más tarde os recuerdo los grupos de los que hemos hablado hasta hoy: Devo , Jefferson Airplane , Love , Os Mutantes , Nico , Françoise Hardy and the Shangri-las. Dentro hay vídeoclips, canciones y un respaso de la discografía de estos grupos. Para volver a empezar no hay ninguna elección mejor que uno de los mejores grupos que existieron en los 80s. Nada más y nada menos que Young Marble Giants. Uno de los pilares de lo que más tarde sería el pop minimalista y la música indie en general. Simplemente con un sintentizador, una caja de ritmos, bajo y guitarra hicieron la música más simple y perfecta del mundo con Alice Statton al frente dandole el toque definitivo con su cantar tranqui y naif. El grupo no duró demasiado y lo más acertado de después fue el siguiente grupo formado por Alice Statton, Weekend que también están chulos pero no llegan a tanto, no obstante Young Marble Giants dejaron nada más y nada menos que el Colossal Youth (que puedes escuchar más abajo gracias a Youtube) una delicia de disco de princio a fin para tener una tarde de relax. vintagetube #5 : jefferson airplane

Late 60s, hippism is all around and the Jefferson Airplane are close to be the biggest psychedelic act around. At least San Francisco's favourites. Beginning as a folk rock band they went to the first places in the charts with their second album "Surrealistic Pillow" thanks to their hits "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit". Two of the most famous 60s songs that transformed them into one of america's biggest psychedelic acts and making them go from their folk to a pure psychedelic pop act on later abums like "After bathing at Baxter's"  to the more rock/revolutionary side of "Volunteers" (my favourite after Surrealistic Pillow). Just an amazing band. Love the 60s.

Jefferson Airplane, grupo encantador que se ha ganado el amor de todos gracias a "Somebody to Love" y "White Rabbit". Unos exitazos en la época que les llevaron a lo más alto de las listas de discos con su tremendo disco "Surrealistic Pillow". El grupo en sí en esta primera época tira más bien del rock y de hecho estas dos canciones no es que hagan buen ejemplo del sonido del grupo son más bien las menos. Siempre, a lo largo de toda su carrera se asemejan más a un grupo de folk rock que a este pop psicodélico. Aunque tal como van avanzando van intentado progresar hacia este estilo lo cierto es que no vuelven a llegar tan lejos como en estos dos temas. Igualmente hacen grandes canciones pero a mi forma de ver más clásicas. Os dejo con un par de preciosos videos que he estado viendo mucho estos días navideños.

vintagetube #5 : love

I wasn't expecting to make a post about Love, but then i found some footage from 1970! Ok, at that point the band was losing their magic but as i see, not live. I would give a leg to see that incarnation of the band live... and i'm not talking about two years prior! But let's get back to the point... Love are the band, people will always jump onto Jimi Hendrix as for the best guitar of all time, maybe is true (just don't say of course...) but Arthur Lee was capable on "Forever Changes" to make an album that is 100 times better and prettier, that you will find new details on it for the rest of your life and wondering how a human could have made such an incredible album. And not just that, their the two previous albums are also incredible, the first one, Love, runs more in a traditional way, not very far away from another american garage bands that were kicking around. The transformation came on "Da Capo" that begans to play with psychedelia and it begans to define the new way of the band to just explode on "Forever Changes".. after that the magic get lost. No pensaba poner nada de Love ya que hasta hace no mucho no encontraba casi material por youtube, en parte, porque el grupo en sus buenos tiempos fue bastante reacio a girar, con que normal. Pero hoy de repente me he encontrado varios videos muy muy chulos (para el fan..) y he decidido escribir un post sobre ellos. Love en sus tres primeros albums básicamente son increíbles, comenzando como un grupo bueno pero tampoco totalmente increíble como llegaría a ser fue madurando y metiendose en la psicodelia hasta llegar a hacer uno de los mejores discos de todos los tiempos, el Forever Changes, un disco monumental de rock con toques muy muy pop semi orquestales y mucha psicodelia. Una delicia que hay que conocer poco a poco para dejarte llevar. Una pasada increíble. Más tarde cambiaría de formación y pierden toda la gracia, pero aún así "Four Sail" es recomendable para el fan del grupo. Más rockero, eso sí. En definitiva, unos mendas que si les hubiese dado la gana de ponerse las pilas tocando podrían haber pisado a Jimi Hendrix en mi opinión.. no como guitarrista, pero sí musicalmente, básicamente engancha mucho más. No en vano eran uno de los grupos de cabecera de Jim Morrison de los Doors.

vitagetube #3 : nico

Here we go with the third volume, to continue in the 60s girl fashion we are going to talk a little bit about one of my all time favourites... Nico! And not just because of her involvement on the Velvet Undergound, later she wrote more than enough good records to make her jump onto one of my all time favourites. For me in special her first LP (that in real is like another Velvet Underground album since Lou and John Cale helped her to make it) is specially great. It's called Chelsea Girl and it's one of my favourites albums ever. Later she changed her style because of some recommendations of Leonard Cohen but on this one she pretty much follow the VU fashion in a more weirder and sensitive way. If you are in love with such songs as "Femme Fatale" or "I'll be your Mirror" this one is for you. For me it's kind of the perfect mix between the VU and Love.

Nico... que decir de ella, una de mis favoritas de toda la historia. Realmente realmente, hay cierto sector que piensa que a la Velvet le hizo más mal que bien pero para mí obviamente no, es ridículo. Lo que si que es cierto es que su obra en solitario muchas veces está eclipsada por los otros componentes cuando realmente para mí es casi la que mejor carrera en solitario tuvo, además que decir, la más personal y anti-comercial. Su primer disco en solitario, Chelsea Girl, es una pasada. Recoge todo lo bueno de la Velvet (de hecho colaboraban el bueno de Lou y John Cale) en una faceta más folk y loca. Con una producción sencilla, limpia y maravillosa. Más tarde por recomendaciones de Leonard Cohen según tengo entendido se pasó a un instrumento raro y cambio de estilo desde el disco Marble Index pero lo cierto es que sigue conservando mucho encanto y sigue teniendo temas demoledores. Una faceta mucho más oscura que de hecho encaja bastante bien con ella. Una gran artista que pasó de ser modelo a una de las diosas de la música pop.  Tras estos dos videos os dejo con algunas preciosas fotos. No olvides de pegarle un cate a Chelsea Girl, te enamorará.

vintagetube #1 : shangri-las

Today we are putting our first music post with videoclips thanks to youtube. We are going to make a serie of vintagetubes about good oldies from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.. who knows if we will put some 90s too. They are already old and there are some good things around.. nowadays they even look vintage too!

Ok, so for the first post i decided to talk about my favourite girl band ever, the Shangri-las with Mary Weiss at the top of their image and also with his incredible voice on first place between a bunch of noise that sound indredibly harmonical and danceable, what we call nowadays a wall of sound. The real difference between the Shangri-las and all the girl groups of the era was really the attitude, they had a teen naif charm mixed with darker lyrics about dead boys that for the era was amazing. They used to wear leather when it was imposible to see girls wearing that type of clothes. Another point for me, it is that they sound more complete like let's say, the Ronettes, their songs are more varied and they have more hits. But the total best thing about this band is the sound , so imperfect, so real and at the end, it make it perfect. It's not like nowadays with this digital shitty effects on the pop stars from nowadays.

So for now here it is, just check the pics and vids. So lovely and fun. And if you want to get some records there's no problem, there are always some compilations on Cds or Lps floating around. With luck you even find some singles for cheap!

Primer vintagetube post, básicamente van a ser topics musicales de otras épocas, ya sea con algún directo o videoclips o simplemente alguna canción vía youtube que así lo podemos poner directamente en el blog. En general será todo sobre los 60, 70, 80 y quién sabe si algo de los 90 que algunas grandes cosas se esconden por ahí! Y a día de hoy ya son hasta vintage!

Para comenzar esta nueva sección que mejor que mi grupo de chicas favorito de toda la historia, ni más ni menos que las Shangri-las. Muy muy conocidas en el mundillo underground de los fans de los 60 pero probablemente desconocidas para muchos de los visitantes que pasen por aquí. Las Shangri-las básicamente son un grupo de pop 60 perfecto. Tienen la imagen con Mary Wess (siempre me recuerda a Marisol no se por qué) al frente de ellas con su vozarrón, tienen la actitud (cantaban en general de temas relacionados con chicos moteros muertos y otras pamplinas del estilo que para la época era una pasada!) y eran consideradas rebeldes.. chicas vestidas de cuero! Otra pasada más para la época y lo justo y necesario para que varios singles saltasen a la fama. Hoy por hoy puede parecer ridículo pero unas adelantadas de su tiempo. Las canciones en sí son de un tono muy rock and rollero con muchos juegos de voces, y además uno de estos primeros grupos que comienzan a meter sonidos por en medio.. motos roneando, charlas en medio de las canciones, cristales rotos y demás para completar. Encima para acompañar meten tralla, mogollón de palmas, baterías de sonido salvaje, pianos, guitarras, panderetas y de todo para formar un auténtico sonido orquestal de fondo pero super sucio. En definitiva, las grandes cosas que me gustan de la música de los 60 y que hecho de menos en los grupos de a día de hoy. Os dejo con unos divertidos videos sin más.
